More Ways To Access Wedding Videography

It’s almost Thanksgiving!  I know you might not be able to tell with the department stores decking the halls a little early, but nonetheless, Turkey Day is upon us.  So in true early style, THANKS for supporting JMV :)

Mary and I are taking this holiday season to look ahead to 2012 and develop some new ideas and resources to bring to you!  Here’s what we are “cooking up”….couldn’t help myself

  • YOUTUBE

If you aren’t already aware, JMV has a YouTube Channel.  We like to create teasers of weddings from the past, and promote any other events that we have provided videography for.  This upcoming year, we will be adding a little more on the informative side to our channel – sort of like a Video Blog…an accompaniment to THESE Blogs! That way you can see and hear what we are talking about, give specific feedback and of course, see our smiling faces :)

  • PODCAST

Along the same lines as the video blog, we are going to create a PODCAST.  A JMVpodcast that will be an audio accompaniment to info, news, trends, deals, etc.  So you can take us in the car with you…or for a run…we know you are busy bee’s.

  • EXPANSION

In BIGGER news, JMV is ready to expand!  That’s right, we are going to be operating satellite offices!  More news on this to come later, but you east folks might be seeing us soon ;)

That’s all for now, keeping it light!  Happy Thanksgiving!

Cheers,

Alison & Mary

A FRESH way to save money on your wedding budget!

We’ve just released out November V1 Newsletter and we’ve found a FRESH way to save some big bucks on your wedding budget in the floral department.  Two words – Baby’s Breath…that’s right, Baby’s Breath, this hidden gem that is used mostly as a filler for bouquets and centerpieces is making a huge surge towards full-blown arrangements!  The vintage all white weddings are really benefiting from the simplicity, and of course color of the once overlooked flower.  So what do you think?  it is worth saving the money on?

This is a super short blog today, but we wanted to just throw it out there and see where it sticks….

“Video-ographer, how do you say it?”

VIDEO-OGRAPHER……CINEMATOGRAPHER…..DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY….VIDEO PRODUCER……

Videographers - Media Professionals

Alison & Mary - Just Married Videography

Confused yet?  Me too.  Delving a little further into why couples might be on the fence about hiring a professional to capture their wedding, I thought we could look into the many names that pop up during the search.  Perhaps the variety of titles might intimidate couples, “what do we search for?”  “is it filmmaker or videographer?” “video-ographerproducerdirector?”  Have no fear…some call themselves a variety of titles to convey their skillset, others are just as unsure about the titles as you…

So let’s break it down a bit shall we? Here are a few guidelines and reasons to think about when searching for that ever popular necessity:

  • SKILLSET: most professionals that capture weddings are not only operating cameras, but are editors, colorists, sound engineers, graphic designers, and encoding masters…can you imagine all that on a business card?
  • MEDIA: the actual media that is being used to capture your day helps to narrow it down a bit – VIDEO or FILM…HD or not, most professionals are shooting on VIDEO…yep, even those awesome HD-DSLR’s or RED cam’s. So are you looking for video, or actual film?
  • MARKETING/POPULARITY: which of these two words seem more attractive and prestigious to you?  “Videographer”  “Cinematographer”  -  for some reason a prejudice as developed towards the term “Videographer.”  Perhaps since the term developed after “cinema”  we devalue it as an inferior medium….but with technology today, we can capture AMAZING imagery with “video-cameras” to an almost exact level of quality as that in cinema.

What do you think?  Ron Dawson, a film-maker in his own right, and a professional who has used most terms himself touches on this interesting topic as well….check out his ideas and BLOG here.

As far as I’m concerned, you can call me whatever you feel comfortable with….

STILL debating on Pro Video for Your Wedding??

Hey Everyone!  So, I came across a great survey done by WEVA (Wedding & Event Videographer’s Association) this past week and wanted to share it with all you couples out there who are on the fence about getting pro video for your wedding…..enjoy :)

“Nationwide Survey of Brides Reveals Value of VideographyProfessional wedding videography is rapidly becoming a preferred medium for recording and preserving wedding memories, according to a new nationwide survey of brides who were married in 2002. The survey, commissioned by WEVA International, was conducted between January 27-February 5, 2003 by Breakthrough Marketing, Inc. Many of the results may seem intuitive to a dedicated professional videographer. However, the new survey provides the results in a quantifiable form.

The survey, conducted by telephone, revealed that brides in the planning process of the wedding do not immediately realize the impact of a professionally-produced video. Before the wedding, while brides are making plans, over half (54%) rank video as one of the Top 10 most important bridal services. However, that number increases to 79% AFTER the wedding, as brides look back and assess the individual value of each service. Before the wedding, 23% of brides view video as a Top 5 service. After the wedding, that number climbs to 42%. The value of video becomes greater after the wedding.

The survey revealed the value of video is greater with brides who use professional video services compared to those who don’t. Before the wedding, 41% of brides using a professional videographer consider videography a Top 5 service. But after the wedding the number grows to 59% who consider video a Top 5 service. And, after the wedding, 94% of these brides say they consider professional videography at least a Top 10 service.

One of the most surprising findings of the survey is the second thoughts, even regrets, among brides who decided not to utilize the services of professional videographers.

Among brides who used a friend or family member to videotape their wedding instead of using a professional, nearly half (49%) said they would hire a professional if they had it all to do over again.

These second thoughts are even more pronounced with brides who didn’t have their weddings videotaped at all. In hindsight, 60% say they wished they had had their weddings videotaped.

As brides look back at their wedding, the survey showed that 79% of brides agree that future brides should at least consider using a professional to videotape their wedding day. Those feelings are even more pronounced among the brides who utilized the services of professional videographers, 95% of whom think future brides should consider using a professional videographer.

The survey results reveal professional videography has become very important to today’s brides. Its value is comparable to wedding photography, and even more valuable in some respects, according to brides surveyed. Most importantly, the survey showed that brides feel more emphasis needs to be placed on videography in the wedding planning process.

WEVA International members will be able to find more survey results along with an industry analysis in upcoming issues of Wedding & Event Videography, the official publication for association members.

Results of this national survey, conducted by Breakthrough Marketing, Inc., are based on telephone interviews with 453 brides who were married in 2002. For results based on the total sample of brides, there is a 95% confidence factor that the margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4.75 percentage points. Breakthrough Marketing, Inc. (Des Moines, IA), are consultants to the wedding industry who regularly research the attitudes and buying patterns of brides, as well as industry trends among specific wedding services.”

Need more reasons?  Give us a call, or shoot us an e-mail. We’d be happy to set your mind to ease and answer all those burning questions that you have about videography, it will be painless I promise!

Wedding Save The Dates – Who, What, Where, When & Why?

SAVE The DATES – are you sending them?

While searching the ends of the universe (the web) for more wedding helpful tips and ideas we came across this great article from rainbowweddingnetwork.com about “Save the Dates.”  Posing all the questions that surround these elusive little goodies, we thought we’d share some of the best bits.  If you’d like to read the entire article, click HERE

Just like an invitation, these can be as formal or as casual as you prefer. Print them to match your wedding colors or make them totally opposite and random if you haven’t picked those things yet. Whatever the style, go for fun and excitement, after all you are sending these to your guests as a tease to the big day, so send the message that YOU want!

  • WHAT?   – As the name implies, save-the-date cards let guests know two things: when the big day or weekend is and that they are definitely being invited.”

  • WHY? – “If your Special Day will reflect certain trendy elements such as including weekend-long celebrations or a destination wedding, guests certainly need time to make their own plans in these situations. A save-the-date card gives them a heads-up.”
  • WHO? – “This should include family, wedding party members and anyone else you would be heartbroken over if they missed your wedding, such as a dear friend who has been extremely supportive of your commitment to one another…”

  • WHEN? – “Ideally this should be six months prior to the date. If you are planning a destination wedding where people will have to take time off from work, find child care and make travel arrangements, then eight months is more appropriate.

An Experienced Videographer Or Amateur?

Alison & Mary - Just Married Videography

OK, so we all know the age old story about some random family member not being the appropriate choice for a videographer, hire a professional, etc.  BUT, how much EXPERIENCE does your videographer need to have?  Sure, and established company/individual who has been shooting and editing weddings for 15 years is a clue that they might know what to look for etc., but what if it’s someone with under 5 years….under 3…under 1?  What’s to say they are not professional?  Equipment, Creative Eye, Professionalism?  Well ideally a combination of these attributes is desired.  Someone who has been working in the wedding industry for so long might not be aware of the new trends just as much as a newer videographer isn’t aware of re-occurring issues.  So let me clue you in a bit on HOW you can tell if your videographer has the right EXPERIENCE to capture and edit your wedding, no matter how many years they have been in business.

QUESTIONS TO ASK:

1. Why are you in the business?

This is just as important as price…GASP!  If the videographer gives a lame answer about money, paying the bills, or worse NO answer, don’t hire them.  You want someone who WANTS to be there, who enjoys their       career and looks forward to capturing your day.  Also a nice time to get to know your videographer more, easier to work together!

2. Tell me about a time when you had to improvise during a wedding?  What happened?

This gives you an indication of their critical thinking during the job.  How did they handle the stress, was it successful, etc.  An experienced videographer might tell you about a “first” for them, such as placing an unmanned camera in a location for extra footage only to find out that once the ceremony started the officiant stand directly in the path!

3. How comfortable are you with the specific equipment that you are going to use for my wedding?

Most videographers own their equipment. But there are times where rentals are needed, so be sure to ask if they can handle the set-up with no delay….audio….camera…lights…all of it.  This will help you determine their technical ability on all levels.

4. What is your overall experience (education/production/etc.)

This might sound silly to wait till the end to ask an obvious question, but think about the previous questions.  If the videographer has answered your questions to a level that you are happy with, what does it matter WHERE they learned how to do it?  Personally I have media degree’s, but does that mean I am better off than a self-taught videographer?  NOPE…what matters is that you gel with each other and they are prepared for YOUR day!

Most importantly – TALK WITH YOUR VIDEOGRAPHER – whomever it might be.  Get to know their background on all levels, personal, technical, professional, and make a better choice!

Cheers,

Alison & Mary
